The 'Anti-Slip' developed in a joint venture with E Wood Ltd, an international company based in North Yorkshire whom manufacture high performance specialist coatings. The typical standard treatment for slippery tiles is based on acid etching, which in turn damages the glaze, removes the shine and leaves the surface rough. Aesthetically unpleasing and difficult to clean. The HSE have specific requirements and regulations regarding the finish and function of floor tiling in non-domestic use. As the ‘Anti-Slip’ product does not significantly change the surface roughness of the tiles treated, questions were raised as to the validity of the product. The objective of the exercise was to prove that the tiles did actually extrude a non slip coating when wet and resorbed the coating when dry.
The results showed that ‘Anti-Slip’ works in a different way to the traditional acid etches; the glaze of a tile or the natural pores of marble / granite is impregnated with a material which expands on contact with moisture, causing bumps to “grow” on the surface, thus providing increased friction and the anti-slip function. The measurements proved that when wet small non slip particles did stand proud of the tile surface leading to increased confidence in the product by potential customers.
