Surface Metrology

The Surface Metrology section is housed in the Nanolab which is the most advanced laboratory of it's kind in the UK. The equipment is capable of measuring to sub nanometre levels and has been used in a diverse range of applications including MEMs, Biomedical and Ballistics.The staff within the centre are constantly developing the equipment and related software to further enhance the capabilities within our laboratory.

The instrumentation consists of Optical Interferometry, Atomic Force Microscopes, and Precision 3D Contacting Stylus Profilometer giving the capability to measure areas up to 50 x 90mm whilst still being able to resolve surfaces at the nanometre level.

Techniques are available to replicate surfaces of components which are too large to be placed on the instruments.

biomedical, - replacement hips, knees and elbows. Skin samples
automotive,  - cylinder liners, gears, camshafts
motorsport, - a broad range of technically and commercially sensitive components have been examined
forensic,- examination of parts to determine cause of failure or prior history
petrochemical, - pumps and valves
general engineering, – examination of surfaces to determine tool wear and machine set up.
